The dark side of Danish colonialism

nger Platou (69) remained silent for decades. She always knew that something terrible had happened in her youth. “It was as if a shadow hung over everything, but I couldn’t talk to anyone about it.” She simply didn’t have the words. “Only when other women came forward with their stories, three years ago, did I realize what had been done to me. Only then could I begin to grieve.”

Platou was twenty when she went to the doctor in 1976 with an infection of her uterus. The Danish physician said she needed a curettage and she was put under anesthesia. While she was unconscious, the doctor secretly inserted an IUD. “He said nothing, neither to me nor to my parents. When I woke up, it had already been placed. And afterwards, no one ever spoke to me about it.”
