Kasper Goethals (1992) is a staff writer for the Belgian newspaper De Standaard, covering stories across the world. He joined the paper as a reporter in 2018. He is the winner of three Belfius Press Prizes, Belgium’s highest distinction in journalism. He is currently based in Istanbul, from where he covers the emergence of a new world order.
Kasper primarily covers international stories and has traveled to over fifty countries. Among other things, he has written about president Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela, the war in Ukraine, the last northern white rhinos in the world, migrant smugglers in the Sahara, and a troubled US army translator who became a refugee in Europe, only to return to his homeland Iraq.
Before joining De Standaard as a staff writer in 2018, Kasper worked for three years as a freelancer. His stories were published by Die Welt, Knack, De Morgen and others.
Kasper’s work was nominated for several major journalism awards in Belgium and the Netherlands. He won the national press prize in Belgium in 2020 and 2022 for investigations in Uganda and the Democratic Republic in Congo. He also was part of team that won the national press prize for audio journalism, with a podcast from Iraq, in 2020. Over the years, he was nominated for another five national press prizes and the Dutch language prize for investigative journalism.
Kasper holds an honours degree in international reporting from the journalism schools of Utrecht (NL) and Aarhus (DK).

Beste Kasper Goethals, ik ben dramaturgie bij Ntgent. Ik las over uw project over Srebrenica maar ben in het buitenland. Is de tentoonstelling nog te zien na 6 maart? Kunnen wij eventueel afspreken? Ik bereid een In Europa avond voor in april en daarin komt Srebrenica aan bod. Het zou interessant zijn om ook de situatie vandaag te behandelen. Vandaar mijn vraag. Vriendelijke groet Koen Tachelet
